The park has announced that the Scenic Railway, which has operated in various forms for over a century, has “completed its journey” as a roller coaster and will now retire from operation as a ride. While this marks a significant moment in Dreamland’s history, the attraction itself is not being removed or abandoned.
Instead, Dreamland says it is committing to the development of a long-term vision that will preserve and showcase the Grade II* listed structure, while giving it a new purpose that allows it to continue to be enjoyed by future generations in a different way.
From Roller Coaster to Cultural Landmark
First opened in 1920, the Scenic Railway is one of the oldest surviving wooden roller coasters in the world and has long been one of Dreamland Margate’s defining features. Its protected Grade II* status recognises not only its age but its national significance, meaning any future use must carefully balance conservation with public access.
Dreamland has described the change as “not the end but a new beginning”, with the focus now shifting from ride operation to creative reuse.
As an initial step, the park will host a pop-up exhibition this summer celebrating the history of the Scenic Railway. The exhibit will explore the attraction’s heritage, cultural importance and memories associated with it, ahead of longer-term redevelopment.
Creative Call-Out and Public Involvement
Dreamland is actively inviting input from both professionals and the wider public as part of this process.
Those with a creative background, or a practical and achievable vision, are encouraged to submit reimagining proposals outlining how the Scenic Railway could be reinvented for a new purpose. Dreamland says these ideas will help shape what comes next for the Margate icon.
Alongside this, members of the public are also invited to share memories, thoughts and ideas via an open survey, allowing past riders, local residents and visitors to contribute their perspectives on the attraction’s future.
No specific timescale has been announced for the long-term transformation, but Dreamland has confirmed that the Scenic Railway will not return as a roller coaster and will instead be re-invented in a different form.
End of an Era, Beginning of Another
For enthusiasts, the retirement of the Scenic Railway as a ride marks the end of an era for one of the UK’s most historically important amusement attractions. However, the park’s approach suggests a desire to preserve its legacy rather than replace it, offering a rare opportunity for public involvement in the future of a protected seaside landmark.
Further details are expected as proposals are reviewed and plans develop.
