Merlin Entertainments to Trial Ride Access Pass Change at UK Theme Parks for February Half Term

Merlin Entertainments will be trialling a change to its Ride Access Pass (RAP) system at three UK theme parks during February half-term. The new trial applies at Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures and LEGOLAND Windsor.

Ride Access Pass

What is changing?

Previously, guests who found traditional queueing environments challenging due to physical disabilities or hidden conditions, including autism, ADHD and severe anxiety, could qualify for a Ride Access Pass. This allowed guests to access rides via an alternative entrance or virtual queue system.

Under the February half-term trial rules, eligibility has been narrowed to guests whose Nimbus Access Card displays specific symbols. Only visitors with the following recognised needs will qualify for RAP during the trial period:

  • Difficulty Standing

  • Level Access

  • Urgent Toilet Needs

Guests whose cards show the symbol for Dfficulty with Crowds, which is commonly used by autistic guests and those with ADHD or sensory processing difficulties, will not qualify for the Ride Access Pass during this trial.

Merlin states that the revised criteria are temporary and are being introduced to help manage demand for the system.

Alternative adjustments offered

Merlin says that guests who do not qualify for RAP under the new criteria may still be offered alternative support. These measures vary by park but can include:

  • Pre-visit planning tools such as sensory guides and visual stories

  • Access to essential companion tickets

  • Quiet spaces and sensory rooms where available

  • Sensory bags, expected to be introduced from March

Guests are advised to speak to Guest Services teams on arrival to discuss what reasonable adjustments may be available during their visit.

What happens next?

Merlin Entertainments has confirmed that the Ride Access Pass changes are a trial only. The company says that it will review guest feedback, operational performance and demand levels once the trial period ends.

Any longer-term changes to the RAP system are expected to be communicated ahead of the main 2026 season, with Merlin stating that inclusion and accessibility will remain central to its approach.
